Muchas personas se endeudan de distintas maneras. Hay casos muy severos, desde luego, pero aunque no lo sean tanto, desprendernos de nuestras deudas de corto plazo (por ejemplo tarjetas de crédito) es una de las decisiones financieras más sanas que podemos tomar.
Recordemos que el monto que estamos destinando al pago de nuestros créditos, es dinero que podríamos estar destinando al cumplimiento de otras metas financieras. Es decir, las deudas nos restan ingreso disponible.
Aquí es importante hacer un alto en el camino y ponernos a reflexionar: ¿Qué haríamos si no tuviéramos estas deudas? ¿Qué otros objetivos de vida podríamos realizar si tuviéramos todo ese ingreso extra disponible?
Ahora bien, como en cualquier otro aspecto de nuestras Finanzas Personales, salir de deudas no es difícil, aunque lleva tiempo. Pero sí requiere de una cierta planeación y de un método que debe aplicarse de forma muy disciplinada.
La Metodología
Cualquier plan para salir de deudas implica que uno pueda pagar, por lo menos, el pago mínimo mensual de todos sus créditos, y un poco más. Si uno verdaderamente no puede, entonces tiene que tomar otras medidas adicionales de las cuales hablaremos más adelante.
Mientras tanto, los pasos a seguir son:
1. Reconocer y enfrentar el problema
El primer paso para resolver cualquier problema es reconocerlo. Tenemos que reunir los últimos estados de cuenta de todas nuestras tarjetas de crédito y sumar los saldos para ver cuánto es nuestra deuda total. De esta manera, habremos calculado la dimensión del mismo y tendremos una fotografía completa de la situación en la que estamos metidos.
2. Esconder todas nuestras tarjetas
Nuestro objetivo fundamental es resolver nuestro adeudo. Por lo tanto, debemos evitar a toda costa seguir usando nuestras tarjetas y de esta manera, incrementarlo. No las portemos con nosotros y no las tengamos a la mano. Es mejor guardarlas en un lugar seguro, para evitar cualquier tentación, y acostumbrarnos a pagar todo en efectivo por el momento.
3. Preparar un plan de acción
Primero debemos escribir en un papel el monto total de los ingresos netos mensuales que recibimos (es decir, libres de impuestos). A continuación, nuestros gastos fijos: renta o pago de hipoteca, teléfono, gas, luz, escuelas, televisión por cable, etc. Ahora, tenemos que estimar nuestros demás gastos, basados en las notas que conservamos, como por ejemplo: supermercado, transporte, etc.
Con esto, podremos ver qué gastos podemos recortar (por ejemplo, televisión de paga, celulares o la línea telefónica de la casa, entre otras cosas, si nuestro problema es muy grave y necesitamos forzosamente cortar todo lo no indispensable para vivir).
Debemos recordar que para poder salir lo más pronto posible de nuestro problema, debemos destinar la mayor cantidad de dinero posible en el pago de nuestras deudas.
Finalmente, uno debe restar sus gastos de sus ingresos para ver cuánto tenemos disponible para destinar a nuestros acreedores. Este monto debe ser suficiente para cubrir con el pago mínimo de todas nuestras tarjetas y un monto para hacer pagos adicionales. En caso contrario, queda muy claro que vivimos fuera de nuestras posibilidades, por lo que debemos remediar esta situación lo antes posible para evitar mayores problemas.
4. Listar y ordenar nuestras deudas
Tenemos que hacer una lista de lo que debemos en nuestras tarjetas de crédito, de la siguiente forma: Nombre de la Tarjeta, Saldo Total (Deuda), Tasa de Interés, Pago Mínimo y Fecha de Pago.
Y luego, tenemos que ordenarlas. Para esto, hay dos enfoques principales:
* Enfoque Financieramente Óptimo. Ordenarlas con respecto a su tasa de interés, de mayor a menor. Es decir, poner primero la tarjeta que cobra una tasa más elevada de interés, y así sucesivamente. Mediante este enfoque, iremos concentrando nuestros esfuerzos en pagar primero las deudas más caras, por eso es la mejor estrategia en términos financieros.
* Enfoque Psicológicamente Óptimo. Ordenarlas con respecto a su saldo, de menor a mayor. Es decir, poner primero la tarjeta en la que debemos menos, y así sucesivamente. Este enfoque nos permite irnos librando primero de las deudas pequeñas (ir reduciendo nuestra lista de deudas de una manera más rápida) lo cual nos brinda motivación. Aunque no es la mejor solución en términos financieros, como mis lectores saben yo soy un convencido del poder que juega la psicología en nuestros aspectos financieros. Por eso, sé que es una estrategia que para algunas personas, puede funcionar mejor.
5. Ahora sí, a pagar
Tenemos que pagar el mínimo en todos nuestros créditos, para evitar caer en mora. Y todo el monto adicional que tengamos destinado al pago de deudas, debemos asignarlo completamente a la primera de nuestra lista, dependiendo del enfoque que hayamos elegido. Cuando hayamos eliminado ésta, nos seguirnos con la siguiente y así sucesivamente, hasta terminar con todas.
¿Y si no nos Alcanza para los Mínimos y un Poco Más?
En este caso, estamos en un problema muy severo, que por lo general requiere de soluciones que por lo general son muy duras. Lo que se puede hacer en estos casos, para aplicar el plan mencionado arriba, es:
* Vender algún activo. Por ejemplo, nuestro auto, o alguna joya familiar. El empeño no es una opción en este caso porque por lo general es un préstamo de corto plazo, con tasas de interés altas (en ocasiones similares a las que cobran las tarjetas de crédito), y donde nos otorgan una fracción del costo de un artículo que podríamos perder en caso de que no podamos pagar este préstamo.
* Ver si podemos obtener dinero adicional. Si tenemos ahorros, probablemente tendremos que usarlos para pagar una parte de nuestros créditos, ya que la tasa de interés de éstos es mucho más alta que la que podemos recibir en cualquier lugar por nuestras inversiones. O bien, quizá podamos obtener un segundo trabajo, que nos brinde una fuente adicional de ingresos.
* Como último recurso, quizá podamos obtener algún préstamo de la familia o de la empresa donde trabajamos, que nos sirva para pagar completamente nuestros adeudos con las instituciones financieras, a modo de quedarnos únicamente con un crédito a una tasa de interés mucho más baja. Es importante mencionar que la consolidación de deudas no resuelve nuestro problema de fondo, y ciertamente no corrige los hábitos que nos llevaron a estar en esa situación.
* Tratar de negociar con nuestros acreedores. La cartera vencida representa un grave problema para los bancos, por lo que en su mayoría están abiertos al diálogo constructivo en aras de obtener una solución para ambas partes. Tenemos que ser muy propositivos con ellos, decirles cuánto podemos pagar e incluso llevarles nuestro plan. Muchos bancos aceptarán refinanciar nuestro adeudo a una tasa de interés inferior a la que aplican normalmente para las tarjetas de crédito e incluso podrán considerar hacernos algún descuento si podemos realizar el pago en una sola exhibición.
